Research results have shown that men have higher immunity. The reasons for the higher immunity have also been revealed, which is expected to be helpful in treating infectious diseases and strengthening immunity in the future.
The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) announced on the 18th that Professor Seungjae Lee’s team from the Department of Life Sciences announced the research results showing that men have higher levels of autophagy activation and thus higher immunity than women. This research was published in the July 4th issue of the scientific journal ‘Autophagy’.
Autophagy is a process in which cells remove unnecessary or damaged cellular debris on their own, and plays a role in responding to external stress. The research team studied the differences in immune responses by gender using the ‘pretty C. elegans’, which is mainly used to study human life activities. As a result, it was confirmed that male C. elegans showed higher immunity to various pathogens than hermaphrodites that have both female and male reproductive organs.
In males with high immunity, proteins that play a key role in autophagy were more active. The research team explained that the more active autophagy is in response to external stress, the stronger the immunity becomes.
This study is significant in that it presents a new approach to treating infectious diseases and strengthening immunity. Professor Lee said, “In the future, we will be able to find new ways to control the immune response of living organisms, including humans.”
