YouTube has announced a series of restrictions aimed at addressing concerns about the impact of certain content on the mental health of teenagers in the United States.

These measures focus on limiting the frequency with which videos related to topics such as body weight and social aggression are recommended.

YouTube’s decision comes in response to complaints and criticism about “problematic” content that is readily available to teenagers on its platform. Therefore, YouTube has decided to take measures to limit its exposure.

Videos that compare and idealize certain physical features and body weights will also be restricted. It has been noted that this category of content can contribute to the promotion of unrealistic beauty standards, which can have an impact on the self-esteem and mental health of adolescents.

Additionally, it is expected that additional efforts will be made to promote more positive and educational content aimed at young people. The updates will also improve the visibility of its “Take a Break” and “Bedtime” reminders, designed to encourage healthier use of the platform. These features were first launched in 2018, and YouTube is now looking to reinforce their impact.

The company’s Youth and Family Advisory Committee helped the platform identify potential content risks for teens, noting that “a higher frequency of content that romanticizes unhealthy standards or behaviors may emphasize potentially problematic messages,” said Allison Briscoe. -Smith, Committee member.

“Those messages can affect the way some teens see themselves. Guardrails can help teens maintain healthy patterns as they naturally compare themselves to others and evaluate how they want to appear in the world,” Briscoe said in a news release.
