Iranian women have not always been as deprived of liberty as they are today. Looking back, we even see photos of women in Iran with mini skirts y fashionable hairstylesespecially in the 60s, under the mandate of the Sha de Persia.
The Shah’s openness clashed with the traditions of the Iranian people and that, together with the extravagant life of the imperial marriage, led to the triumph of the islamic revolution. Thus the Shah’s regime ended, giving way to the arrival of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
Women are the big losers of this change, coming to be considered as second class citizens. They inherit half as much as the barons, they are not allowed to ride a bicycle or motorbike, and they need their parents’ permission to marry.
Sex is prohibited outside of marriage and women need men’s permission to work and travel and must cover their heads from an early age.
