With fuel prices breaking all records, in addition to trying to locate service stations with the cheapest prices, drivers can put into practice some techniques with which we will be able to save a significant amount of fuel in our daily journeys.

According to the ANFAC Manufacturers Association, efficient driving has an effect of reducing the environmental impact, as well as on the pockets of drivers, who can experience savings of about 300 euros per year, a figure that can rise to 900 euros per year in the case of to combine this type of driving in a new vehicle compared to an old one.

New cars incorporate “much more efficient” technologies than an old one, which makes it possible to experience a reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of up to 30%.

From the Government, through the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, they have also compiled a series of recommendations with which we can reduce the consumption of our vehicles.

The IDAE recommends starting the engine without stepping on the accelerator. In gasoline engines, start driving immediately after starting. In diesel engines, wait a few seconds before starting the gear.

Use the first speed only to start the march, and change to second at 6 meters (2 seconds). According to the revolutions: in gasoline cars we change gear between 2,000 and 2,500 r/min. In diesel engines, between 1,500 and 2,000 r/min. Circulate as much as possible in the highest gears and at low revolutions. In the city, whenever possible, use the 4th and 5th.

Keep it as even as possible. Seek fluidity in circulation, avoiding unnecessary braking, acceleration and gear changes. To brake, lift your foot off the accelerator and let the vehicle roll with the gear engaged at that moment. Whenever speed and space allow, stop the car without first downshifting.

Always drive with the appropriate safety distance and a wide field of vision that allows you to see 2 or 3 vehicles ahead. As soon as an obstacle or a reduction in traffic speed is detected on the road, we will lift our foot off the accelerator to anticipate the following manoeuvres. In most situations, applying the rules of efficient driving contributes to increasing road safety. But there are also traffic circumstances that require different specific actions, so that security is not affected.
