The tragedy happened during an amateur match at the Toluca Stadium in San Salvador, El Salvador. The Salvador Soccer Federation said in a statement that referee Jose Arnoldo Amaya had been killed.

The players and spectators turned against the referee when the player was shown a yellow card for the second time for a foul. The dispute, which began as a heated argument, later escalated into an attack on the referee. Arnoldo was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. Hospital officials said the death was due to severe internal bleeding.
