San Salvador: A referee was beaten to death by spectators and team fans after he showed a red card to a player during a football match. The tragedy happened during an amateur match at the Toluca Stadium in San Salvador, El Salvador. The Salvador Soccer Federation said in a statement that referee Jose Arnoldo Amaya had been killed.
The players and spectators turned against the referee when the player was shown a yellow card for the second time for a foul. The dispute, which began as a heated argument, later escalated into an attack on the referee. Arnoldo was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. Hospital officials said the death was due to severe internal bleeding.
El Salvador police said one person was arrested in the incident. El Salvador police said on Twitter that Juan Manuel Cruz, a member of the militant group, had been arrested. Arnoldo has 20 years of experience in refereeing. He has officiated at several collegiate and amateur tournaments throughout his career.
