Towards a compromise? A senior member of the Likud told Ma’ariv today (Monday) about the President’s outline for reforming the judicial system that it is a “good start to negotiations”, this against the background of the speech delivered last night by President Yitzhak Herzog in which he referred to the reform and called for negotiations between the parties before its transfer.

“The outline presented by the president is a good start to the dialogue that needs to take place between the parties,” said the same senior official, “it’s all a question of whether our political opponents are indeed ready for dialogue or whether they are interested in chaos and fratricidal war. We turned to peace and dialogue.’

A senior political official said: “The president should take advantage of the coming week, and start the time for him to discuss his outline. From Kehalat to the Institute for Democracy, etc. If he starts, it will be more difficult to stop the process.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Constitution Committee, MK Simcha Rothman, is expected to bring two of the articles of change within the legal reform of Justice Minister Yariv Levin to the first reading in the committee today. The vote in the first reading will be on changing the composition of the committee for the selection of judges and on the explicit statement that the High Court cannot interfere with basic laws enacted by the Knesset. To the opposition members’ demand for a confidential discussion on the security implications before the vote, Rothman announced that the discussion would take place after the vote.
