The Rennes University Hospital (Ille-et-Vilaine) filed a complaint and investigations were underway to identify the scope of the data leak that occurred during the cyberattack that targeted the hospital on Wednesday. According to management, no ransom demand has been made by hackers, and at this stage of the investigations, no files have been encrypted.

“The CHU has filed a complaint and it is the specialized unit with a prosecutor from the Paris prosecutor’s office who will carry out the necessary judicial investigations”, announced Véronique Anatole-Touzet, director of the CHU, during a press conference.

“We do not know the cause, the origin of the attack in a precise way. On the other hand, what we can say is that there is a strong presumption that the origin of the attack is external to the CHU, via one of our service providers, ”added Véronique Anatole-Touzet. “But this has not yet been proven, and is still the subject of additional investigations,” she said.

The scale of the attack unknown

If, concerning the care of patients, the CHU has confirmed that the attack had no consequences on the Samu, the Smur and the making of appointments, on the IT side, the management of the CHU does not did not expect a return to normal before “several weeks”. “We do not know today (neither) the extent nor the scope of this data leak, we cannot say whether or not it concerns patient data,” said Véronique Anatole-Touzet.

Since Thursday, teams from Anssi (National Information Systems Agency) have been on site at the CHU to strengthen its computer system. The checks will concern some 1,000 servers and 700 workstations at the CHU. “When we know the extent of the exfiltrated data, we will notify the patients concerned or the professionals,” added the hospital director. This Friday, the CHU website was still unavailable. Internal messaging was restored on Thursday evening.

Other French hospitals have been the target of cyberattacks in recent months, including that of Brest, which had to operate in degraded mode for several weeks in March.
