“We believe that this is the right decision, which could have been made a long time ago. Because K. Starkevičius has experience as Minister of Agriculture, he is positively evaluated among farmers. Most importantly, the man himself is a farmer, and is very closely related to this area. This is one of the few decisions related to the Government that could be considered wise and be celebrated,” explained I. Hofman to Elta.
“Perhaps there will be a similar situation as with the Minister of National Defense, where the change worked,” he assessed.
Although the Government of the changed composition will continue its work for just a few months, the representative of the ŽŪT believes that if K. Starkevičius becomes a minister, the fundamental problems of the agricultural sector will be solved.
“I think that at least some fundamental problems will definitely be solved and there will definitely be a good result,” he asserted.
Previously, I. Hofman has claimed that the appointment of K. Starkevičius as Minister of Agriculture would help to rehabilitate the image of the rulers in the eyes of farmers.
The politician himself previously said that he did not know whether he would accept such a proposal and that he believed that all arguments should be considered.
Last week, on Monday, G. Nausėda signed a decree appointing I. Šimonytė as Prime Minister. The politician must form and submit a new government to the president by next Monday – then the 15-day deadline provided by the law expires.
The Presidency has already made it clear that among the members of the Government, the future of Minister of Agriculture Kęstutis Navickas in the cabinet is the most doubtful.
G. Nausėda said in April that if the Minister of Agriculture K. Navickas was not able to answer the uncomfortable questions addressed to him, then the head of the country may not confirm him in the Government, after the Cabinet of Ministers returns its powers after the presidential elections
On Wednesday, G. Nausėda repeated to journalists that he believes that changes in the right-wing government are necessary. According to him, the updates are needed in order to ensure a high-quality consideration of the next year’s budget.
In turn, I. Šimonytė said that even a few months before the Seimas elections, changes may take place in the Cabinet of Ministers. However, according to her, such changes must be justified.
The Cabinet of Ministers is formed and reconfirmed after the Government has returned the powers to the newly elected sworn-in President.
