Jaanus Purga, who held the post of special government representative in Ida-Viru County for less than a year, left his post on October 1 by mutual agreement of the parties. Narvskaya Gazeta asked local politicians how, in their opinion, the special representative handled his tasks.

Jan Toots, Mayor of Narva:
– The contribution of Jaanus Purg in the last year cannot be underestimated. We worked closely with the government representative. It is because of his efforts that a new hotel will appear in Narva, in addition, directly through his efforts it was possible to launch the renovation process of 4 residential buildings on Viru Street. It also helped create new businesses and jobs.

Vadim Orloventrepreneur, Narva City Assembly representative:
– We had a lot of contact with Jaanus Purga and we often discussed the processes that were taking place in Ida-Viru County and Narva. It was mainly due to his merit that the funds from the Direct Transition Fund were distributed.

He was the first to draw attention to the fact that the process of allocating funds to enterprises is very bureaucratic. Thanks to his actions, the application process has become easier in many ways. To put this in numbers, 150 million euros were distributed in less than a year. His departure is a great loss for the region. It is not enough to distribute the funds, they must also be used successfully, and here his experience would also come in handy.

Kate RijkDeputy City Assembly of Narva:
– I consider that the main merit of Jaanus Purg is his work with the funds of the Just Transition Fund. Narva got less than it could have been, but this is not the fault of Purga, he did his job.

It is worth saying that when the position of the special government representative was first discussed, it was not very clear what he would do. Fortunately, he did not have to deal with issues such as the transition to the Estonian language of education or the surrender of arms by Russian citizens. After all, he is an entrepreneur himself, and according to his profile, he got a job.

Denis LarchenkoDeputy City Assembly of Narva:
– I am sure that this decision will be in the interest of the state and, at least, its budget. There is a need to save money now, and jobs like this are ideal for redundancy. In addition, it is worth noting the high activity of the representatives of the government themselves. Ministers and representatives of ministries go to our region with enviable regularity.

This is especially true for ministries that are currently carrying out the most serious reforms affecting Ida-Viru County – the transition to Estonian education, the Just Transition Fund, etc. Christina Kallas always travels here. In this case, there is no need for a separate government representative. They actively represent themselves and communicate with county residents, entrepreneurs and local governments.

As the Minister of Agriculture and Regional Affairs Piret Hartman said in an interview with Real Camera on Wednesday, October 2, the post of special government representative in Ida-Virumaa will not remain vacant.

Purga plans to return to the private sector, but wants to continue helping local governments in dealings with the government.

Jaanus Purga is a former board member of Viru Keemia Grupp, one of the founders and managers of SA Rohetiiger. Purga worked as a government representative in Ida-Viru County from October 16, 2023 to September 30, 2024.

The representative of the government in Ida-Viru County was selected through an open competition. At that time, 34 candidates sent their applications.
