“There was an exchange of views on obligations to guarantee Ukraine’s international security, Russia’s responsibility, EU sanctions against Russia, the use of frozen Russian funds and the international isolation of Belarus and Russia,” the press service of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on December 20.

The representatives of the foreign policy agencies “unanimously agreed on the need to continue supporting the democratic forces of Belarus and update the issues of political prisoners.”

“It is important to ensure that Belarus remains on the agenda of the European Union,” the report says.

The Baltic countries and Germany are “united in condemning Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine.” Diplomats discussed ways to help the Ukrainian people “in resistance and victory over the aggressor”. In addition to Ukraine and Belarus, the meeting was concerned with the expansion of the European Union, the “Eastern Partnership” policy, the situation in the South Caucasus and Central Asia.

Belarus and Lithuania are fighting together against Russia’s “imperial ambitions and for the common future in the European Union,” declared democratic leader Svetlana Tsikhanovskaya on December 14 at a briefing on the results of committee hearings in the Lithuanian Seimas.

The politician called support from Lithuania crucial. She thanked the people of this Baltic country for “being there in such a difficult time and accepting thousands of Belarusians who are fleeing terror and repression.”

In addition, she called on the Lithuanian authorities to abandon the idea of equalizing restrictive measures in relation to Belarusians and Russians, as “this is exactly what Putin and Lukashenka want.”
