“I have asked Mancuso to help build peace in the Urabá region,” commented President Gustavo Petro.

President Gustavo Petro made important announcements from Turbo, Antioquia, during the Women for Regions and Life meeting, focused on the search for peace, regional development and improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of Urabá.

One of the most notable announcements was the request that the Head of State made to former paramilitary chief Salvatore Mancuso who was appointed peace manager. Petro expressed: “Salvatore Mancuso has just returned to Colombia; is free, or about to be free. I have asked him to be a peace manager and that acts in terms of peace; that helps to build now, no longer the trenches, no longer the rifles that are going to shoot at the people, but peace«.

This decision by President Petro seeks to ensure that Mancuso can contribute to reconciliation and reparation for the victims of the armed conflict in Urabá, marking a significant turn in the role of the former paramilitary chief.

Furthermore, Petro announced the investment in two aqueduct projects for the Urabá region, one of which would have an estimated cost of one billion pesos. This project would be based on the construction of a desalination plant, the feasibility and financing of which will be discussed with the local community.

The president also called on the inhabitants of the region to present additional proposals that contribute to the development and transformation of Urabá, especially for the benefit of the most excluded communities.
