Time.news – In 2023, the Laboratory of Restoration of Paintings and Wooden Materials of the Vatican Museums, one of the oldest structures in the sector in the world turns 100 years old.

To celebrate this important milestone of experience, innovation and care of works of art, on Monday 11 December, at 10.30 am, an exhibition will be presented in the Conference Room of the Vatican Museums which will allow visitors and enthusiasts to explore the fascinating stories that lie behind every work of art: a unique opportunity to appreciate up close the details that often escape the visitor, but which are revealed under the lens of restoration.

It will be possible to admire, through the eyes of restorersthe execution techniquesthe conservative history, the different choices that characterize each restoration intervention.
The contents, published online, will be accessible along the museum route by scanning a QR Code, positioned near the restored painting.

The Painting Restoration Laboratory is one of the historical realities in the conservation sector not only for the Vatican City State, but at an international level. The activity of this department involves the conservation of the heritage of the Holy See, made up of tens of thousands of square meters of wall decorations and approximately 5,300 inventoried movable paintings, through monitoring, preventive checks, maintenance, emergency interventions, movements, studies, collaborations, scientific research, which often contribute and culminate in the complex act of carrying out a complete restoration.
