US retail giant Walmart announced on Thursday that it plans to add electric vehicle charging stations to thousands of stores across the US by 2030.

The company announced that it will expand its EV fast charging network to Walmart and Sam’s Club locations across the country, adding to the nearly 1,300 EV stations currently operating in 280 of the company’s locations. Walmart did not provide additional details about the investment.

Walmart said that they are in the process of finding suppliers to provide the service and it plans to own and operate the EV charging stations in its national network. The company anticipates that an average of four chargers will be installed in each parking lot of a participating store, Reuters reported.

In the past, Walmart has worked with EV charger providers, EVgo. The company has grown its network significantly over the past two years. “Easy access to on-the-go charging is a game-changer for drivers who hesitated to purchase an electric vehicle for fear of not being able to find a charger in a convenient and simple location when needed,” said Vishal Kapadia, Senior Vice President of Energy Change, in a statement.

The planned expansion will make owning an electric vehicle more reliable, Kapadia said. More than 47,000 stores and 600 Sam’s Clubs are located within 15 miles of the homes of about 90% of Americans, Walmart estimates.
