The town of Moribadou, in the prefecture of Beyla, was the scene of violence last week which resulted in several deaths, injuries and significant material damage.
The reason is that the citizens of this locality protested against the recruitment policy of Rio Tinto’s subcontracting companies, which they rightly or wrongly accuse of excluding the local population.
These very determined citizens had refused all negotiations with local and then regional authorities. According to our information, the governor’s motorcade had been attacked.
This is how the army was requisitioned to restore order. The village had thus become a ghost town. This is how a large delegation from Konia chaired by its president, Elhadj Mamady Camara, went to the site in order to find common ground on this problem.
“The situation in Moribadou is not a specific situation. Everywhere in the mining areas, there are always problems. We have managed to channel the problems. The Simandou project is one of the largest projects in Africa. And the current authorities of the country in particular, President Mamady Doumbouya, want peace. It is in this context that we came and we were listened to. When we spoke to our children, they pulled themselves together. And they promised that such events will not happen there again. Mount Simandou belongs to all of Guinea and not to a sub-prefecture and not to a community. And the villagers are therefore determined to put themselves at the disposal of the government and society for the good of all,” explained the former deputy mayor of the commune of Matoto.
After Moribadou, the president of the national coordination of Konia met with the notables of N’zerekoré in order to strengthen social cohesion in the region.
It should be noted that the activities which were temporarily suspended have already resumed in Beyla.
