A domestic study found that if adult women enjoy 2-3 cups of black coffee a day, they can reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome, which is known as the ‘death quintet’ and causes high blood pressure, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, by 34%.

According to the Korea Food Communication Forum (KOFRUM) on the 15th, a research team led by Professor Je Yu-jin of the Department of Food and Nutrition at Kyunghee University analyzed the relationship between coffee consumption and metabolic syndrome among 14,631 adults aged 19 to 64 who participated in the 2016-2021 National Health and Nutrition Survey, and confirmed this.

My professor team evaluated the diet, including the type and amount of coffee consumed over 24 hours. Based on the amount of black coffee consumed per day, the research participants were divided into four groups: non-coffee drinkers, less than 1 cup per day, 2-3 cups per day, and more than 3 cups per day. Then, the risk of developing metabolic syndrome was compared between the groups.

The risk of metabolic syndrome in women who drink 2-3 cups of black coffee a day was 34% lower than that of women who do not drink coffee. When women drink less than 3 cups of black coffee a day, the level of ‘high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol’ in the blood, which is good for blood vessel health, increases, and the level of ‘neutral fat’ in the blood, which is bad for blood vessel health, decreases. In men, there was no significant relationship between coffee consumption and metabolic syndrome.

My professor team analyzed in the paper, “The conclusion of the study is that if adult women drink 2-3 cups of black coffee a day in moderation, the risk of metabolic syndrome is lowered,” and “This may be due to the positive effects of coffee on HDL cholesterol and neutral fat.”

Professor Shin Sang-ah’s team from the Department of Food and Nutrition at Chung-Ang University previously announced the results of a study in ‘Nutrients’ in December 2019 showing that drinking not only black coffee but also bagged coffee (containing coffee mix, sugar, and coffee mate) lowers the risk of metabolic syndrome.

In this study of 14,132 people, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 18% lower in women who drank bagged coffee. Women who enjoyed bagged coffee had lower triglyceride levels and higher HDL cholesterol levels.

A 2018 paper published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Association of Coffee Consumption with Metabolic Syndrome in Koreans by Gender: A Cross-sectional Study in Korea) also found that coffee consumption in women lowered the risk of developing metabolic syndrome.

The results of my research team’s recent study were published in the latest issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (EJCN).
