Even before the departure of the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, this Monday late in the afternoon, the speeches of the oppositions were already well rehearsed. The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, can change the host of Matignon, maintain the suspense, nothing fundamentally changes. The head of state accelerated “the presidentialization of the Fifth Republic”, thus denounces Bruno Retailleau. According to the boss of the Les Républicains (LR) senators, regardless of the casting, “the prime minister’s name is Emmanuel Macron” guilty of having “abolished the office of prime minister”.

Between the pension reform and the immigration law, the leaders of the right had learned to discuss and work with Elisabeth Borne despite the difficulties. “I do not understand the urgency for Mr. Macron to change prime minister, advances the head of LR deputies, Olivier Marleix. No one in the country asked him. Ms. Borne had, I think, too much personality for the president. This is the first time that he had a prime minister who ultimately had convictions. »
Despite their disagreement, the LR deputy for Eure-et-Loir will miss the former prefect who worked in socialist cabinets. Bruno Retailleau too, without predicting his future relationship with his potential successor, the current Minister of Education, Gabriel Attal. “Even though we didn’t come from the same store, my working relationship with her was more than adequate”explains the senator from Vendée. “In many circumstances, she had the courage that others did not have. She was a quality interlocutor for me”greets, for his part, the president of LR, Eric Ciotti, on the social network X.

At the National Rally (RN), the tone was more glacial. The far right was quick to mock the outgoing Prime Minister, described as « Mme 49.3 ». The RN hardly liked the methods of the former prefect, reluctant to include the party of Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen within “the republican arch”. If she reserved for the second the same official respect as for the other group leaders, she did not feel embarrassed in bringing the far-right party back to its history – calling it “Pétain’s heir” in May 2023 – and claimed to “not believing in its normalization”.
The Lepénist leaders did not hide their contempt for the resident of Matignon, whom they considered devoid of political sense despite her career in senior administration, then ministries. As if to mark their indifference, Ms. Le Pen and Mr. Bardella abstained from any reaction to his departure. Deputy President of the RN group in the National Assembly, Jean-Philippe Tanguy, for his part, crudely mocked “a bureaucrat blindly carrying out Emmanuel Macron’s orders”dont “the only legacy will have been to vape in the Hemicycle”.
