It was the first time that Emmanuel Macron was interviewed by journalists from Humanity and the latter shook him up somewhat. This did not prevent him from responding “directly” to their questions.

Questioned in particular about the National Rally, the President of the Republic judged that the party did not “fit into the Republican arc”. Comments which contrast with those made by his Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, who affirmed at the beginning of February that “the republican arc is the Hemicycle”.

The President of the Republic, however, considered that we could not “disregard” the presence of the far-right party in the Assembly. “Its deputies vote on laws and the National Assembly has entrusted them with responsibilities,” he declared, adding that the RN was no longer a “resolutely anti-Semitic and Holocaust denial” party, which, according to him, “the National Front “.

No “equivalence between the two extremes”

“On the other hand, I have always considered, as with the immigration law, that important texts should not pass thanks to their votes,” he said.

The French president also assured that he did not “pose an equivalence between the two extremes” even if he believes “that, through their positions, certain personalities of rebellious France are fighting the values of the Republic”.

Asked about the presence of the RN at the pantheonization of communist resistance fighter Missak Manouchian on February 21, the head of state judged that “the far-right forces would be inspired not to be present, given the nature of the fight of Manouchian”. “But I am not going to decide on that through an arbitrary gesture,” he added.

Right in his boots on Mayotte

Regarding the controversy surrounding his proposal to revise the Constitution to remove land rights in Mayotte, Emmanuel Macron assumes: “It is legitimate to ask this question because the Mahorais are suffering. They also welcomed this proposal very positively, whatever their political sensitivities. We must stop the migratory phenomenon in Mayotte, at the risk of a collapse of public services on the island.”

Mayotte is a French department in the heart of the very poor Comoros archipelago. “Families travel there and arrive in France, via Mayotte, where they have access to services completely uncorrelated with the socio-economic reality of the archipelago,” he judges. “Mayotte is the first maternity ward in France, with women who come to give birth there to have little French children. Objectively, we must be able to respond to this situation,” says the president.

“Added to this is a new phenomenon in recent months, given the security difficulties in the Great Lakes region: a massive arrival of people from Tanzania and other countries,” Macron further explains. And to argue that to “break this migratory phenomenon”, we must “restrict access to social rights for people in an irregular situation”.

An “untenable” situation in Gaza

In this interview, Emmanuel Macron was also questioned about the situation in Gaza and the offensive planned by the Israeli army on the city of Rafah. The head of state deplored that the humanitarian situation there was “already untenable”.

“I told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that in my eyes Rafah was a breaking point in these operations,” he said.
