During the four days of vacation for the Carnival Holiday, about 5,803 national and foreign tourists visited the Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve; one of the most important natural attractions of the province and center of the country, and despite all its charms, is forgotten by local and provincial authorities.
Getting to the shelters of the enormous colossus has become an odyssey and a real headache, due to the enormous potholes and craters that tourists and transporters must overcome during the journey, especially in the section known as El Arenal. Tourists and drivers who complain about the deterioration of the road describe this stretch as a mixture of a lunar terrain and a battlefield. “This road has been forgotten for several years and no one is doing anything to change this reality. The annoyance is not only for tourists, but for all users who circulate daily along this road axis that connects Chimborazo and Bolívar,” said citizen Carlos Calderón; He and his family visited this attraction regarding the holiday. With great fanfare, in June 2022, the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP), under ministerial agreement, declared the Calpi-San Juan-El Arenal road as part of the State Road Network; decision that would allow this State portfolio to allocate budget to carry out maintenance and resurfacing work on the road. However, to date the population and users who travel along this road axis are waiting for urgent intervention.
