They burst out laughing. They had tears in their eyes. They shouted their joy. They lifted their trophies and savored their victory before calling their loved ones. The Reunion women’s team (Anna-Emilie Ichambe-Ranemachise, Meï-Lan Ah-Tiane, Julie Begue Germane, Amélie Lebeau, Valérie Paradis, Mazarine Camalon)– from the city of Le Port – won, hands down, at the end of May at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the InnovaTech 2023 challenge organized by the Elles Bougent association. This promotes the place of women in trades where they are a very small minority, such as industry or digital technology. The key to the success of the winners: a robot bee that recharges with solar energy and will pollinate the vanilla flowers.
But before being called, these young ladies and their godmothers had to defend their idea in front of a jury and the 16 other regions represented for this national final (for 780 participants in all in this edition). A necessarily impressive moment for the high school girls who do not have to be ashamed of their performance on the stage.
“The world of industry is not just for boys”
They put themselves in the situation and detailed their project before answering specific questions. Without disassembling, the Réunionnaises shared their convictions and responded tit for tat. The cost of a bee? “2000 euros per unit! But it helps to relieve the farmer and save time in pollination, which only lasts a few days a year”. An idea that they will also be able to present to Roland Lescure. The Minister Delegate for Industry has promised to receive them in a few weeks.
But above all, this challenge was an opportunity for high school girls to carry out a project and show that the “she” has its place in these professions. “The world of industry and innovation is not reserved for boys. Do not limit yourself in your choice of studies and careers”, launched with determination Sabine Lunel-Suzanne, the president of Elles Bougent.
