This year’s rose harvest campaign presents Bulgarian producers with a series of challenges. For the first time in 15 years, the rose bush has started so early.
“The year is strange because we started picking on April 26,” rose producer Velin Velikov explained to NOVA.
The early start of the oil rose collection leads to the need for quick organization and the finding of pickers. The lack of labor is the biggest obstacle at the moment.
“You can’t estimate how many people need to work because the weather is different every day, you don’t know what to expect,” added the rose grower.
Uncertain prices for roses are also among the problems of growers in this industry.
“The amount of rose that is harvested every year has decreased. The gardens that are cultivated have decreased because it is very labor-intensive. Everything in the rose garden is done by hand, which is becoming more and more expensive. From there I can guess who does how the bill I say, but obviously the yields are decreasing, the gardens are deserted and the oil produced is correspondingly less,” explained Velin Velikov.
