Due to rising water levels, the organizers of the Paris marathon announced this Friday, April 5 that they will have to slightly modify the route of the event, scheduled for this weekend.

The flooding of the Seine redraws the course of the Paris marathon. Scheduled for this Sunday, April 7, the 42.195 km race has been “very slightly modified” due to the rising waters of the river crossing the capital. “Due to the flooding of the Seine, the organizers, in consultation with the City of Paris and the Paris Police Prefecture, have taken the decision to very slightly modify the route of the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris 2024, at the Park level. Rives de Seine,” the organizers wrote on X (formerly Twitter) this Friday, April 5.

In detail, the route of this 48th edition is modified from the Henri IV tunnel to the Tuileries tunnel, the section being “made inaccessible”. “The passage of competitors will be on the high platforms instead of the low platforms,” they continue. Schneider Electric also specifies that the new route was approved several years ago by officials of the French Athletics Federation (FFA) “in the event of a flood of the Seine”. It will not present any difference with the route initially planned.

In total, some 54,000 participants are expected this weekend. That is 2,000 more than the previous edition, which was already marked by a record. Athletes will gather on Avenue des Champs-Elysées for the big start.
