Electric scooters and bicycles are two types of vehicles that are becoming more and more fashionable, significantly increasing their presence in cities, thanks to their qualities for traveling in this type of environment.

Although for some people they may be considered “toys”, the truth is that they are vehicles for all purposes, and as such they must have certain characteristics and approvals. In addition, its users have to know and comply with traffic regulations, both those of a general nature and those specific to Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP).

According to the General Traffic Regulations, these are vehicles with one or more wheels equipped with a single seat and powered exclusively by electric motors that can provide the vehicle with a maximum speed between 6 and 25 km/h. They can only be equipped with a seat or saddle if they are equipped with a self-balancing system. This definition excludes vehicles for people with reduced mobility.

In the first place, they cannot drive on the sidewalks and they are prohibited from driving on interurban roads, crossings, highways, dual carriageways or urban tunnels.

As explained from the DGT, driving an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol and other drugs can lead to a fine between €500 and €1,000 depending on the amount of alcohol or €1,000 if it is drugs. In addition, if it tests positive, the vehicle will be immobilized, as is the case with other vehicles.

Mandatory equipment and recommendations of the DGT DGT

For using a mobile phone while driving a scooter or any other communication device, the fine will be €200.

For those who wear headphones, drive at night without lighting or reflective clothing, or if they do not wear a helmet, if the municipal ordinance contemplates this measure as mandatory, the fine will be €200.

In addition, it is remembered that electric scooters need periodic maintenance with their corresponding revisions. It is not recommended to use it if it has broken parts, if the battery life has decreased considerably, if there are air leaks in the tires or signs of wear, or when there are sounds when turning or other abnormal symptoms.

You also have to monitor the condition and pressure of the wheels if they are with an inner tube. When cleaning, use a damp cloth avoiding electrical areas. Never charge overnight, in case it overheats and catches fire. Charging must be done before the battery is completely discharged and never if the scooter is wet or there is humidity.
