The People Power Party, the government, and the Office of the President emphasized livelihood responses such as price management in preparation for Chuseok, measures to address fires in old buildings, measures to address fires in electric vehicles, and the medical vacuum situation at the high-ranking ruling party-government meeting held on the 25th.

Han Dong-hoon, People Power Party leader, said at a high-level party-government meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Samcheong-dong, Seoul on the afternoon of the same day, “The party and the government should discuss together to manage prices stably ahead of Chuseok.” He added, “Even after the Chuseok holiday, we must be even more thorough in managing prices.”

Regarding the fire at an accommodation facility in Bucheon on the 22nd, he said, “Although sprinklers are required to be installed on all floors of buildings with six or more floors, this requirement is not imposed on older buildings,” and “I hope the government and the party will discuss fire prevention measures for older buildings in depth once again.”

A representative said, “During the last closed-door high-ranking party meeting, we proposed to further discuss measures to prevent electric vehicle fires, and the party and government have made a lot of efforts since then,” and emphasized, “We need to clearly address this issue and establish some rules through legislation.”

Regarding the medical vacuum situation, he said, “Let’s have the government and relevant authorities work together to thoroughly prepare countermeasures so that the inconvenience caused by the medical situation is not aggravated by the strike of the Health and Medical Workers’ Union.”

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said, “The government will make special efforts to stabilize the cost of living, including the prices of Chuseok shopping baskets, and will do its best to stimulate domestic demand and reinforce vulnerable areas so that many citizens, including ordinary citizens and small business owners, can fully feel the trend of recovery in their livelihoods.”

He also said, “We will respond to external risks such as the recent increase in global financial volatility and the resurgence of geopolitical instability in the Middle East.”

Regarding the fire at the Bucheon accommodation facility, he pledged, “We will have sufficient discussions between the ruling and opposition parties regarding any insufficient measures and make improvements as soon as possible.”

Prime Minister Han also said regarding the opening of the regular session of the National Assembly, “It may be a bit late, but I hope that starting from this regular session, the National Assembly will focus on processing livelihood bills and reviewing the budget based on mutual respect and agreement.” Regarding the Nurses Act in particular, he said, “I earnestly request that you make every effort to pass it during this session.”

Presidential Chief of Staff Chung Jin-seok publicly proposed the creation of a “livelihood fast track” to separately process non-controversial livelihood bills.

Director Jeong said, “Last week, the first livelihood bill, the ‘Special Act on Real Estate Fraud,’ passed the standing committee and is scheduled for a plenary session. This is a good sign.” He added, “In order to continue the original form of the National Assembly, how about creating a fast-track for livelihood, such as a ‘livelihood legislation speedy passage system,’ that separates non-contentious livelihood bills from political strife and processes them in each session?”

He said, “I sincerely hope that the ruling People Power Party led by Representative Han Dong-hoon will lead this regular session of the National Assembly to focus on the people’s livelihood issues and the future rather than the past.”
