Over the past year, the price of candy has increased by an average of 21%. But as Halloween approaches, the French continue to have fun.

By bag or large handful, not counting. Two days before Halloween, we’re getting ready to stock up on candy. In a store in Salon-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône), customers do not seem to want to deprive themselves, despite inflation. The price of candy is rising by 21% on average, according to a consumer association. And some references more than others. The package of marshmallows increased by 24%, like sour candies from a major brand which jumped of 26%.

A product that does not suffer from inflation

Will the French limit their purchases? According to an expert, the answer is no because sweets mark their difference from other food products. “Candy is a small taste pleasure at a low price. There are not many products in daily consumption that have such a good ratio between cost and the pleasure it can generate”explains Olivier Dauvers, specialist in mass distribution.
