The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced the receipt of the first batch of modernized MiG-31BM supersonic interceptors. They were provided by the Sokol aircraft factory in Nizhny Novgorod. About this on July 15. the press service of the Russian company “United Aircraft Corporation” reported.
“The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation received the first batch of repaired and modernized MiG-31 aircraft this year. After ground and flight tests, the aircraft have been sent to their permanent base,” the statement reads.
It is noted that the modernized MiG-31 aircraft “have high combat characteristics and can successfully perform tasks in modern conditions.”
The planes were delivered according to the state order, but the delivery parameters are not disclosed. All aircraft are understood to have undergone major overhauls and upgrades, as well as the necessary ground and flight tests. The engineering staff accepted the equipment, after which the aircraft departed for their permanent base.
According to Bulgarian military online media, Russia is not producing new MiG-31 aircraft. Therefore, Sokol is modernizing the MiG-31 to the level of the MiG-31BM.
The modernized version of the plane has better combat characteristics. The aircraft can reach a flight height of up to 20,600 m and develop a speed of up to Mach 2.83 (about 3,000 km per hour). The MiG-31BM is armed with various air-to-air missiles, including the R-33, R-37, as well as the R-77. This makes it possible to effectively neutralize air threats at long distances. The length of the plane is 22.69 m, the height is 6.15 m, the wingspan is 13.46 m.
The aircraft is equipped with two turbojet engines with an afterburner D-30F-6, ensuring high thrust and operational capabilities. The Zaslon-M radar allows detection and tracking of multiple targets simultaneously, and modernized navigation and communication systems increase the aircraft’s combat effectiveness, Defense Express writes.
“According to the plans of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the MiG-31 will serve until it is replaced by a new successor,” concludes the Bulgarian military.
