The gastronomic icon of Tucumán is the Milanese sandwich that is made in a peculiar way with strips of cut lettuce, tomato, figazza bread, four pieces of thinly cut buttock and fried egg.

Such is the connection of this dish with this province of Northern Argentina that a sculptor dedicated a significant work to it on two occasions.

It is the monument to the Milanese sandwich of Tucumán, which has a peculiar history hidden behind it: in 2000 the local artist, Sandro Pereira, presented this work in the province, which was well received and began to gain some notoriety.

So much so that this monument, which measures 2.20 meters high by 1.80 meters wide, was exhibited for a day in the famous Plaza 9 de Julio in Tucumán and then a Buenos Aires art gallery bought it for a sum of 10 one thousand US dollars.

It was not until nine years later that the Tucumán plastic artist began to design the second monument to the provincial sandwich, which was completed in 2013 and donated to the Tucumán authorities, who placed it in the center of the city as a tourist attraction.

In 2015, a group of people who could not be identified vandalized this monument and for a year this piece of art was fenced off to begin a recovery process that unfortunately was never implemented.

Sandro Pereira considered that the damage was irreparable and that is why he ordered the destruction of the second monument to the Milanese sandwich in Tucumán.

The plastic artist quickly assured that he had neither the money nor the desire to undertake a third monument, so it is not yet known if Tucumán will once again have a work of these characteristics.
