MADRID, 19 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Saharawi Ministry of Information has communicated this Tuesday that the Israeli recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory of Western Sahara is worthless.

“Such a decision is not considered an achievement for the occupying State of Morocco, but represents a clear condemnation of an alliance of two discordant states, which militarily occupy Western Sahara and the Palestinian territories, respectively, subjecting their peoples to the same practices of oppression and confiscating their internationally recognized rights to self-determination and independence,” the ministry said in a statement collected by the SPS news agency.

“Israel’s decision to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara has no legal or political value (and) would only strengthen the determination of the Saharawi people to continue their liberation struggle on all fronts,” added the ministerial portfolio.

In addition, he has considered that Israel “has despised” and “has mocked” the feelings of “millions of people”, and has warned about the “serious repercussions” of the alliance between Morocco and Israel.

He has also assured that it is an attempt to take advantage of the conflict to “implement subversive military and security agendas” that threaten both the stability of North Africa and the Sahel.

Israel formally recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara last Monday in a letter sent by the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to King Mohamed VI, as announced by the Alaouite Royal House.

As was the case with Spain’s turn towards the Sahara, it was Rabat who announced Israel’s new official position. In March 2022, it was also the Alaouite Royal House that reported the letter from the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in which the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara was supported as “the most solid, realistic and credible basis” for a solution to the conflict.

In the case of Israel, its position is in line with that adopted in December 2020 by then US President Donald Trump, who also recognized Rabat’s sovereignty over the former Spanish colony. That was precisely the bargaining chip for Morocco to normalize relations with Israel.
