A round and encouraging number -nothing less than 1000 people transplanted and with a new opportunity for life -, was the reason for the celebration that a few weeks ago, the Kidney Transplant Unit of the San Martín Hospital de la Plata, one of the main public health institutions in the Province of Buenos Aires.

The round figure of one thousand people who received a kidney transplant was achieved thanks to the work of a team made up of 84 people. And the thing is that, apart from the surgeons, instrument makers, psychologists, nurses and other specialized health personnel participate in this group.

About 1,000 kidney transplants are performed annually in Argentina.

The unit, which was born in 1996works especially with low-income people since, according to hospital sources, “60% of all individuals transplanted in this unit They do not have social coverage, prepaid or social works.”.

The challenge that its managers plan for this year is increase the number of operations of this type. “We want to surpass our record from 2019, the year in which we performed 47 kidney transplants in twelve months.” This is important since -according to INCUCAI data-, today there are about 29 thousand patients undergoing dialysis and 5,000 people on the waiting list for an organ. In addition, approximately 1,000 kidney transplants are completed each year.
