The rain in recent days helped push the deadline for Montevideo and Canelones to run out of water.

The rains of the last 48 hours have been positive for the Santa Lucía River basin, which is severely affected by the drought that has been affecting the metropolitan region of Montevideo and Canelones for several months now.

According to meteorologist José Serra, the recorded averages were 27 millimeters in San José, 47 millimeters in Florida, 31 millimeters in Canelones, and 45 millimeters in Lavalleja. According to him, the most affected areas were the Florida and Lavalleja regions, especially in the headwaters of the Santa Lucía River, where an average of 40 to 45 millimeters was recorded, which is very beneficial for the water supply system for OSE.

“If we talk about rainfall in the departments of the Santa Lucía river basin, we have an average at this time of 37 millimeters, that is, 37 liters of water per square meter,” Serra reported.

In the breakdown, he provided that in San José the average was 27 mm, in Florida 47 mm, in Canelones 31 mm and in Lavalleja 45 mm. “In other words, the most affected areas were the Florida and Lavalleja regions, right at the source of the Santa Lucía River, where we had an average of 40 to 45 millimeters, something very good,” he added in his explanations.

“But well, part of this precipitation will be absorbed, it will leak into the soil, but something very important: the instability will continue, we will continue to add on this day and for tomorrow these data will suffer some variation due to the accumulation of the precipitations until this time, since they will continue until the early hours of the afternoon”, he continued.

Forecasts for the next few days: Will more rain be expected?

Regarding the weather forecasts, the expert Serra has declared that today, Thursday, the region north of the Negro River will experience an afternoon with overcast and cloudy skies, accompanied by scattered storms. The temperatures will oscillate between 20 and 21 degrees Celsius as a maximum, while the minimum will be between 13 and 14 degrees Celsius. This indicates that an afternoon characterized by a humid and unstable atmosphere is expected, although temporary improvements are expected.

For tomorrow, Friday, a sky is forecast that will oscillate between overcast and cloudy, with variable cloudiness. Although there will be some isolated precipitations, these will be scarce and of low intensity. Temperatures will begin to drop, reaching a maximum of 17 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 9 degrees Celsius. In addition, fog is expected in the area.

According to Serra, precipitation is not expected on Saturday. The sky will present a slight cloud cover, and temperatures will oscillate between 18 degrees Celsius as a maximum and 4 degrees Celsius as a minimum. A sunny day is forecast for Sunday, with the presence of some scattered clouds. The temperatures will reach a maximum of 18 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will oscillate between 2 and 3 degrees Celsius. These low temperatures will give rise to the formation of agrometeorological frosts. Serra especially highlights the drop in temperatures towards the end of the week.
