The scandal grows in Colombia: Petro’s son says that his father knew about his campaign’s irregular money

Among the problems that Colombia has suffered since Gustavo Petro assumed the presidency, one of those that has focused the most attention of public opinion has been the scandal related to the illegal financing of his electoral campaign and which led to the arrest of his son Nicolás Petro Burgosaccused of alleged crimes of money laundering and illicit enrichment.

In the investigation process of the Prosecutor’s Office, Nicolás Petro confessed that he received money that was not reported to the National Electoral Council (CNE) and that was later used to pay for his father’s campaign, and then he promised to deliver documentation, audios and other types of evidence as a gesture of collaboration with the country’s Justice.

Regarding the investigation, Semana magazine has revealed that when the prosecutor asked in the interrogation if the then candidate knew of the financial contributions and irregular financing by businessman Euclides Torres, who has a contract with the state, Nicolás Petro responded that “Yes. I knew perfectly well that Euclides was the one who financed the campaign.”

Furthermore, always according to Semana, he added that “Benedetti – former Colombian ambassador to Venezuela – always emphasized it in my presence, that it was Euclides who was financing the events and the campaign.”
