Mr. Principal:

The second Battle of Rinconada was on January 5, 1861 due to the invasion promoted by the National Executive Power, led by Santiago Derqui against San Juan. The first battle of Rinconada de Pocito was on September 9, 1825.

This second battle, which today marks 163 years, was in the context of the governorship of Antonino Aberastain. The provinces were in a civil war due to the struggle between the Unitary and Federal Forces. The Presidency orders the intervention in San Juan and leaves the direction of the attack in charge of Juan Saá, who marches with mostly Mendoza troops. Saá is found by the San Juan forces in the district of La Rinconada. The battle ends with the total defeat of the San Juan forces, and with the capture of Antonino Aberastain. Dozens of officers, including Aberastain, were placed in the custody of Colonel Francisco Clavero. Fearing a rebellion or attempted escape, the next day Clavero ordered Aberastain’s execution.
