In a year where the price of used vehicles has soared, the used market has generated more than 700 million euros in the Girona regions. Girona’s second-hand car market, however, closes the year with figures very similar to 2022. During 2023, up to 34,686 sales of used cars0.8% more than at the end of 2022, but almost three and a half points below the data for 2021, according to figures from the employers’ association Faconauto.

According to the latest data from the cars.net barometer, the marketplace expert in mobility, in November the average price of second-hand cars in Catalonia stood at 21.162 euros3.7% more than a year ago, a figure that if we multiply it by the 34,686 operations registered in the province means a turnover of 734 million euros. And it is that 2023 was one record year for the price of used cars. In September, the historical maximum was recorded in the State as a whole, with an average price of 20,764 euros – a month in which, on average, second-hand cars were sold in Catalonia for a value of 21,332 euros-. The state record high almost doubles the price recorded 10 years ago, in March 2013, when the lowest average price in the historical series was reached, 10,964 euros.

Car sales are growing in Girona but are still far from pre-pandemic figures

If we look at the price according to the age of the car, the most striking thing is the rise of semi-new cars, that is to say those that have been on the market for less than 12 months, the price of which has increased by 6.8% to stand at 39,223 euros in Spain. It grows in all the remaining ranges, but at a lower rate: between +0.8% (those over 10 years, which are worth 8,992 euros) and +4% (between 4 and 5 years, the average price of whose offer stands at 23,289 euros).

“The fact that it is the offer that grows the most does not mean that the youngest vehicles are also the ones that sell the most. In fact, almost 60% of cars sold in November were more than 10 years old. Given that it does not contribute at all to the much-needed rejuvenation of the park in our country”, explains the institutional manager of coches.net, Marcel Blanes.

If we take into account both sales of new cars and second-hand passenger cars, the car market in the Girona regions has closed the year registering 46,546 operations, around 5.6% more than last year.

In Catalonia, the second-hand market closes the 2023 financial year with a growth of 3.6%, standing at 273,701 units sold, according to the MSI consultancy for employers in the Ganvam and Faconauto sector. If we focus on the last month of the year, December registered a decrease of 5.9% (26,607 units).

As for the computer in Spain, the second-hand market closes the year with a growth of 2.6%, reaching 1,940,488 units sold, thus fulfilling the established forecasts. In this way, for every new touristic vehicle, two second-hand ones were sold in Spain.

In an analysis by seniority, the data reveal that one in four (25.8%) second-hand cars sold in 2023 were between zero and five years old. Specifically, these young models registered a total of 500,370 units, which is 5.5% more than last year.

This increase in sales of used cars up to five years old has to do with the recovery of the stock, once the chip crisis has been overcome. In fact, rental and car rental companies, which last year had to delay the renewal of their cars due to tensions in the supply chain, close 2023 with notable increases in their operations with used vehicles, which shows that they are already renewing the fleet normally, according to details from the employer.
