The protest took place in front of the building of the Armenian Foreign Ministry against the backdrop of the arrival of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejcinovic-Burich, Day.Az reports with reference to the Armenian media.

The protesters demand the release of public and political figures of Armenia who are political prisoners. As former deputy Naira Zohrabyan noted, PACE co-rapporteurs on Armenia should come to Armenia.

“We demand that the CE Secretary General urgently organize discussions regarding political prisoners in Armenia and adopt a resolution demanding the Armenian leadership for their immediate release,” Zohrabyan said.

In turn, human rights activist Ruben Melikyan said that the Council of Europe has been monitoring the situation in Armenia for many years, in particular in the field of human rights.

“The Council of Europe stated that people should not be detained for political reasons, especially so harshly – with their heads on the asphalt. We gathered to demand that Pejcinovic-Burich not apply double standards,” Melikyan said.
