Although today he has almost fallen into oblivion, the fact is that Antonio Garijo played a very important role in the last months of the Civil War, in which he appeared as the main negotiator between the two armies to achieve peace. His story has been saved by journalist Alberto Laguna – author with Victoria de Diego of the legend ‘secret war’ (Arzalia, 2024) –, which helps us to tell this unusual story in the following podcast.
They took over the government in the wrong place. If he had had the choice, the warlord of this Republic would have fought with the rebels. However, he had no choice but to do so with the Republican party, where he held positions of great responsibility and suffered many misfortunes, as he was spied on by both parties.
The famous General Miaja, one of the main leaders of the Republican Army during the Civil War, was the first to save him from being imprisoned and killed. He is not the only one who has angels watching over them. Garijo was a survivor, until March 22, 1939, when he was called to the Ministry of Finance to attend an important meeting. Once there, Colonel Casado himself surprises him: he has been chosen to do a top secret job, possibly the most important of the Civil War… and this is his amazing story.
