BarcelonaThe security guards at El Prat airport have reached an agreement with the company and have called off the strike that was supposed to start this Thursday. The works committee and the management of the company of the Netherlands I-Sec have closed this morning pact, after 15 hours of meetings and the mediation of the Department of Labor of the Generalitat. The aim of the strike, which was due to start on August 10 with stoppages every Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in three time slots, was to achieve social improvements for the staff, who are satisfied with the improvements achieved .

The company has agreed to pay part of the wage increases that the workers asked for. For example, an “assistance bonus” of 20 euros per month will be offered to security guards who have not requested any medical leave in the months of September, October and November 2023. I-Sec will continue to pay this supplement, or the ‘will increase in some cases up to 40 euros, if it is possible to reduce the rate of absenteeism and place it between 7% and 10%.

The company has also agreed to reward the guards’ English skills with an additional language. This payment would be 20 euros per month for those who pass an initial level test, and 35 euros for those who present an official qualification equivalent to level A1.

More women in the workforce

In addition, the unions had denounced the discrimination suffered by female workers within the group of security guards. At this point, I-Sec assures that it will “make maximum efforts to achieve parity” and hire more female employees before November 1, 2023. In addition, it undertakes to relocate pregnant women to administrative tasks, so that they do not have to take on physical jobs.

There was also an agreement regarding breaks: workers with an eight-hour contract will have a main break of 30 minutes, plus two complementary breaks of 10 minutes each. Even so, the unions have not managed to scratch any agreement regarding the payment of parking, although the workforce complains about the cost it means for the guards to park their private car at the airport.

The call for a strike by I-Sec security guards, with a workforce of around 500 people, has recalled other labor conflicts at El Prat airport, such as the collapse that left the workers of Eulen summer 2017.
