The self-portraits of the cartoonists enter the Uffizi Gallery

52 self-portraits of some of the most brilliant cartoonists on the Italian scene enter the collection of the Uffizi Galleries. The works – created with different techniques, formats and styles – will be presented at Lucca Comics & Games 2021 from 8 October to 1 November as part of the exhibition «Comics in museums | The self-portraits of the Uffizi »curated by Mattia Morandi and Chiara Palmieri. The exhibition – dedicated to Tuono Pettinato, recently deceased cartoonist and author for Comics in the Museums of the register set at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence – is one of the initiatives envisaged by the memorandum of understanding signed by the Uffizi Galleries and Lucca Crea to favor the development and promotion of comics in Italy and abroad.


The agreement also provides for the participation of the Uffizi and the Ministry of Culture in the designation of the Master of Comics of Lucca Comics & Games as part of the Lucca Comics Awards and the entry, every year, of the winner’s self-portrait into the collection of self-portraits of the Florentine museum. The agreement will have a duration of two years and will be renewable: within its scope shared initiatives of various types may be undertaken: in addition to exhibitions, also events, cultural productions, creative, educational, scientific partnerships and much more.
