DECRYPTION – Fears of an economic slowdown, low demand in consumer electronics and industry are impacting manufacturers. A rebound is hoped for in 2025.

Peter Wennink, CEO of the Dutch giant ASML, and Jean-Marc Chéry, boss of the Franco-Italian STMicroelectronics, may have given each other the word. According to them, 2024 will be a “transition year” in the semiconductor industry. These two major players in the sector – the first produces machines to manufacture chips, the other is an integrated designer and manufacturer – revealed their financial results this week. And everyone is exercising caution, after a turbulent end to 2023. Over one year, both have certainly seen their revenues increase, by 30% for ASML, compared to 7.2% for STMicroelectronics.

But the start of the year and the outlook for 2024 are not looking good. STMicroelectronics therefore forecasts a decrease in its revenues of 15.2% in the first quarter year-on-year and an overall drop in its turnover over 2024.
