Iconic Signature Room Restaurant in Chicago Closes Permanently Due to Economic Issues

September 28, 2023 – The Signature Room, a renowned fine dining establishment located near the top floor of the former John Hancock center in Chicago, has announced its permanent closure. In a sign posted at the restaurant’s location, the closure was attributed to “economic issues.” The news comes as a shock to both locals and visitors who have enjoyed the restaurant’s upscale dining experience and breathtaking city views for over 30 years.

The closure notice, obtained by NBC Chicago, expressed the restaurant’s deep regret. “For over 30 years, we have had the privilege and honor of serving Chicagoans and visitors from all over the world. Unfortunately, after the closure of our city and restaurant due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been faced with severe economic hardship, and the challenges have been greater than anticipated,” the sign read.

Similar messages were also posted on the restaurant’s website and Facebook page, informing patrons of the permanent closure. NBC Chicago’s attempts to contact the Signature Room were redirected to an automated messaging system, and online reservations on the restaurant’s website were unavailable.

According to a memo obtained by NBC Chicago, the closure has been described as “an extremely difficult situation” for Signature Room employees. The memo assured employees that information would be provided regarding insurance and personal belongings left behind.

The Signature Room has been an institution in Chicago dining since its opening in 1993. Located on the 95th and 96th floors of 875 N. Michigan Avenue, it has been renowned for its upscale atmosphere, strict dress code, and panoramic views of the city. The sudden closure has shocked not only patrons but also neighboring businesses in the building.

360 CHICAGO, which operates on the floor directly below the Signature Room, expressed their sadness over the closure. “Like many, all of us at 360 CHICAGO were shocked and saddened by the sudden closure of the Signature Room. For 30 years, we’ve not only shared our own dedicated elevators with the Signature Room, but they’ve been wonderful neighbors and partners, and their presence in the building will be missed,” said Nichole Benolken, managing director for 360 CHICAGO.

Speculation arises as earlier this year, Crain’s Chicago Business reported that the space housing the restaurant was up for sale. It is unclear if this contributed to the establishment’s closure.

As this is a developing news story, further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
