CoAlthough the court found Umesh and Udayan, the accused in the case of rape and murder of a foreign woman in Valat, Panathura natives guilty, Sunith’s friend says that the fight of the murdered woman’s sister is not over. At that time, he had traveled from Kanyakumari to Mangalore in search of his friend’s sister. Their small business in Ireland collapsed due to the liabilities arising from the case and its problems,’ says Sunith. Sunith shares with Mathrubhumi.com about the legal battle and people’s attitude on that day.

Conducted by the sister of the murdered woman How does Sunith become a part of the investigation and the fight?

In 2018, the woman was in Thiruvananthapuram while working with a media outlet to investigate the disappearance of her sister. On that day, he was introduced to them in the name of giving a news as part of the investigation. At that time they did not know much about this country. The language was unfamiliar, so people needed help again to design a poster and so on to find their sister. So I thought I could help a little. But I didn’t think it would last long.

How did people approach the investigation?

We really don’t want to remember anything from that day. It was such a difficult time. Therefore, on the day when the court pronounced the accused guilty, he was alone in the crowd. I know how hard they were.

At that time in 2018, we had searched a lot of places. We traveled every day on the beaches from Kanyakumari to Mangalore searching for the young lady’s sister. Posters will be put up in all the places there. He will inquire about his sister from those who pass by. The search was continued in various places like fishermen, mosques, temples etc.

They were walking all over the coastal areas to find out if their sister had been there and if she had seen them. We searched for almost 40 days until we found the body. Parallel to the investigation by the police, we were also investigating as much as possible.

Many people came to help them at that time. NGOs, social workers and politicians have helped us at that time. But they are very intelligent people. If you meet someone, you will understand their character in a short time. So I understood the goals of the people who came for help and avoided them all.

The accused have been convicted in the case, what next?

Ilsa participated in the court proceedings online. The accused will be sentenced on Monday. They are currently going through the most critical time. She and her sister had started a venture in the neighboring country. In 2018, due to the murder of a young woman and the problems that followed, the initiative collapsed. My sister was here for several months in 2018. They went back because the small business in the country was at the point of collapse and tried to come back in 2019, but it was not possible.

And by 2020, the problems of covid spread. Coming again in 2021. All the court procedures related to the case were strictly followed. Had to spend a year here. With that, the business in the country came to the verge of collapse again.

It has not been decided whether to come here again. It is expected to come to Kerala next October. She is writing a book about her sister’s disappearance, death and investigation. Its things will go on. I don’t think the case is over here. Defendants may appeal. So the proceedings of the case may be prolonged. The sister of the murdered woman
It is a big journey for me.
