The Kremlin said the situation in the Middle East is developing in an alarming direction and called on all countries to exercise restraint, Reuters reported.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained to journalists that Russia maintains contacts with all countries in the region and stressed that Moscow condemns any action that leads to the death of civilians.

Earlier today, Israel said regular infantry and armored units were joining ground operations in southern Lebanon, stepping up pressure on the pro-Iranian Shiite movement Hezbollah. Israel is also preparing to retaliate against yesterday’s Iranian missile strikes.

“The situation is developing according to the most alarming scenario,” said Peskov. “We call on all parties to exercise restraint in light of what is happening. And, of course, we condemn all actions that lead to the deaths of civilians,” he added.

Asked what Moscow would do next and whether it would support Iran in the event that Tehran entered into a full-scale conflict with Israel, Peskov replied: “We have contacts with all parties in this conflict, we continue to maintain them, and we call on all parties to exercise restraint.”

On Monday, the Kremlin condemned the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike last week, and said it assessed the risk of a major war in the Middle East as “extremely high,” BTA reported.
