The condition of Shahin Verdiyev, who was arrested for the Ganja incidents, worsened in court. The situation has reached such an extent that an Emergency Medical Service was called to the court. This happened on June 21 at the Sabunchu District Court.

The cases of those arrested for the Ganja incidents were later divided into several groups and sent to court separately. The case of the group of 8 people, including Sh. Verdiyev, is heard by the judges of the Ganja Serious Crimes Court in the building of the Sabunchu District Court in Baku.

From the beginning of the court session, Sh. Verdiyev’s condition was not good, it was evident from his face that his mouth was drooping.
Sh. Verdiyev’s lawyer, Zibeyda Sadygova, filed a motion to allow the accused persons to be taken out of the glass cabin and sit next to their lawyers. But the board of judges chaired by Dadash Imanov did not provide.

“Nothing is more important than human life”

After that, Sh. Verdiyev said that he did not feel well and asked the judge to at least allow him to splash water on his face. He was allowed. When he was returned after some time, it was found that he was given some medical assistance. However, his condition was worse than before. Other accused persons also brought this to the attention of the judges.

The judges saw that the situation was getting worse, and an emergency medical service was called to the court.

In this case, his lawyer Z. Sadygova filed a motion to postpone the trial: “Nothing can be more important than human life. This man’s condition is extremely bad. Please postpone the process.”

The prosecutor opposed the motion, but the court granted the motion and stopped the process.

Court decisions have disappeared from case materials

The first-instance trial of several groups related to the events in Ganja has been concluded and the sentence was read out to them. But they appealed against the sentence and currently their appeal is being considered in the Baku Court of Appeal.

At the court held on June 21 on the appeal of 11 people who received prison sentences from 7 years, 6 months to 9 years, the defendants said that some documents disappeared from the case files. Some of those detained due to Ganja events were previously sentenced to 15-20 days of administrative detention. In the case of some of them, a criminal case was started against them after the administrative punishment was over. There are also those who, after two or three days of administrative detention, were brought to the police station, a criminal case was opened and charges were brought.

Azerbaijani legislation prohibits double punishment for the same act. The defendants said that in order not to reveal this fact, the court decisions on their administrative punishment were removed from the case files.

The accused Ruslan Hasanov claims that the management of Ganja Serious Crimes Court has a role in the disappearance of the documents. According to him, the chairman of the court, Natig Aliyev, is a relative of the former executive head of Ganja, Elmar Valiyevgil, who was removed from his post shortly after he was shot in July of last year: “Khanlar Valiyev (brother of E. Valiyev, the country’s military prosecutor-ed.) is the godfather’s brother. They do what they want.”

“I didn’t have money, they charged me with false accusations”

Accused Vagif Ashrafov said that actually, the number of those detained after the Ganja events was more. According to his claim, they took a certain amount of money from the relatives of hundreds of people and released them: “They asked me for money to release them, but I didn’t have money. That’s why they put these false accusations on me…”

Shahlar Rzayev, who is suffering from tuberculosis and has been detained in the Penitentiary Service’s specialized institution No. 3 in Bina settlement, says that he has not been able to contact his family members for two months.

Lawyers also spoke at the court. They said that no credible evidence was presented to confirm the accusations.

The court proceedings related to the events of Ganja will continue on June 24.
