The fire in Mount Slavyanka (Orvilos in Greek), which has been burning for the 11th day, has so far burned 15,500 acres on the Greek side, writes the information site from Seres “Annexartitos”.

After the rain on Thursday, it seemed that the spread of the fire was limited, but in the last two days the fire flared up again and on Saturday it also crossed into Bulgarian territory.

The ecological damage in the mountain is great, and according to the European satellite system for monitoring forest fires, nearly 15,500 decares of areas have been affected so far, of which 3,690 decares are forest, 5,100 decares of low vegetation and 6,700 decares of infertile land, BTA reported.

Efforts to bring the fire under control from the air with the help of planes and helicopters continue in Greece. In addition, a team of 25 people from the Special Forces for Forest Operations and firefighters from Sidirokastro and Kato Poroya are extinguishing outbreaks, but only along a certain path, because there are old minefields in the area.

Bulgaria has activated the civil protection mechanism of the European Union (EU) and has requested an aircraft to extinguish the fire, Minister of Internal Affairs Kalin Stoyanov announced today to journalists in the village of Gara Elin Pelin.
