Such a ridiculous price for traveling by train does not happen every four mornings. SNCF is selling 10,000 one-euro tickets this Tuesday, May 23. The tempting offer aims to celebrate the first anniversary of “OUIGO Classic Train”, launched just a year ago on the Paris – Lyon and Paris – Nantes routes. A total of fourteen stations are served. The offer, available from Tuesday at 7 a.m., only lasts twenty-four hours for journeys between May 24 and July 5. As usual when sales open: first come, first served, while supplies last.
Those who miss the opportunity will still be able to benefit from affordable prices. Throughout the year, OUIGO Classic Train allows you to travel between 10 and 49 euros maximum. 60% pay less than 20 euros. For children under twelve, the ticket is at the fixed price of 5 euros. The only drawback: time. Unlike the OUIGO Grande Vitesse, the “classic trains” run at the same speed as the TER or Intercités. From Paris, it takes 3h57 to reach Nantes and 5h02 to reach Lyon. About the same time as by car.
More than 1.3 million customers in one year
This does not put off customers, on the contrary. Since their launch, these revamped former Corail TER trains have transported 1.3 million customers. A third are young people, more sensitive to price and less to travel time. On the strength of this profitable success, the railway company is already considering developing the offer on new sections. Cities like Bordeaux, Marseille, Rennes, Lille or even Brussels, in Belgium, could be affected.
However, these new routes will not be operational immediately. First, the SNCF wants to wait for the end of the two-year experiment, on Paris – Lyon and Paris – Nantes, scheduled for 2024. Above all, the rail group does not have sufficient trains. Although they are used by the Regions, to date there are no second-hand TER trains available. Alstom deliveries of brand new trains to Hauts-de-France and Grand-Est, among others, in the coming months should gradually unblock the situation.
