The sneaker brand N91, which comes from Mitte, celebrated its latest collaboration during Berlin Fashion Week: a sustainably and fairly produced sneaker that was created in cooperation with the African brand Enzi.

N91 and Enzi pursue common goals: fair working conditions and minimal emissions. Terms that have been used almost excessively in the fashion industry in the recent past. It is rarely explained what is really behind it, but the two sneaker start-ups provide sound background information.

Students of the “Sustainability in Fashion and Creative Industries” course at the Academy of Fashion & Design dealt with the production processes of N91 and came to this pleasing result: The graphic shows the kilometers covered by the shoes from different manufacturers. White, stone grey, gray depict three of the largest sneaker companies in the world, anonymously of course. From the start of production to the customer, the N91 in yellow is the winner.Mathilda Schröder

How does that work and what does the designation “Made in Europe” mean for N91 shoes? Where do the materials come from and how is it produced? The answer: Compared to other well-known sneaker manufacturers, the partners were able to reduce transport routes by up to 89 percent. This is achieved through the concentrated production of all shoe parts in European factories. This is quite unusual for sneakers, relevant brands still produce in low-wage countries. The priority is therefore to save on transport routes, but compliance with fair working conditions is also one of N91’s ethical challenges. That’s why the young Berlin brand regularly visits its production facilities to check its condition.

Same values, two different continents

Collaboration partner Enzi in Ethiopia is facing the same challenges, as CEO and co-founder Azariah Mengistu explains to us during the launch event over a Zoom call. His brand is a message of young, developing Africa and its culture, which creates jobs and promotes economic growth. From Addis Ababa to Berlin they say; the sneaker is made by hand in Ethiopia.

The result is a limited edition genuine leather sneaker. As a special element, it has been equipped with a tongue on which a traditional black and white jagged pattern sits. Of course, this piece of fabric was also woven by hand. In addition, all materials used for the shoe come from Ethiopia. The leather comes from local livestock.

The “Court M EZ” is available in black and white and each is limited to 75 pairs. The shoe is available for purchase on the N91 website for 199 euros.N91

N91 and Enzi invited to the launch of their new collaboration at Berlin Fashion Week, the social media agency Tribes hosted the event on Tieckstraße in Mitte. The young company N91 is also based in Berlin-Mitte, and when it came to naming it was inspired by the historical postal code of the district.

Even if the Berlin Fashion Week is already entering long-term memory, there is still something worth mentioning: this Q&A round at the launch event of the collaboration between N91 and Enzi, for example. Tribes
