The new Netflix survival thriller “The Snow Company” tells the true story of a plane that crashed over the Andes in 1972. It is intended to be a memorial to the 45 inmates, 16 of whom survived for months under unimaginable circumstances in the icy landscape.

A rugby team on the way back from Montevideo (Uruguay) to Santiago (Chile). Below their plane there is nothing but lonely nature and the snow-covered glaciers of the Andes. When the plane crashes, a fight for survival begins in one of the most difficult environments there is – frost, ice and nothing but meters of snow as far as the eye can see.

The hope for help was still there at the beginning…

The new Netflix survival thriller “The “Snow Company” tells the true story of the Uruguayan rugby team “Old Christians” that crashed over the Andes in 1972. 29 of the 45 inmates initially escaped with their lives, hoping for a quick rescue from the icy environment. But it quickly became clear , that help from outside would not come due to the supposedly hopeless situation in the Andes – and that extreme measures had to be taken in order to have any chance of survival between the Andean peaks, which are up to 6,000 meters high. This included fights for dwindling food and resources also cannibalism.

Netflix survival thriller “The Snow Company” honors 45 passengers from Flight 571, which crashed in 1972

As early as 1993, director Frank Marshall tackled the true story of the plane disaster in the film “The Survivors!” with Ethan Hawke – in an attempt to honor the 29 occupants who initially survived the crash. The new Netflix production now goes one step further and gives all 45 passengers a memorial – with text showing the name and age of each person. A new trailer that Netflix has now published gives impressions of the thriller directed by “Jurassic World 2” director Juan Antonio Bayona.

Tragedy, passion, history: these films are based on true events

In the clip you can already see the first impressive scenes of the crash as well as the snow-covered landscape in which the survivors find themselves after the disaster. And the core issue, which was already discussed controversially back then and caused horror among the public, is also discussed: “If you don’t have food, you’ll starve,” one survivor can be heard saying, and “if we don’t eat, we will we die”. Falling temperatures of up to 40 degrees below zero, freezing rain, hurricane force winds and the group’s dwindling energy put additional strain on them for months. It is known that those who crashed initially ate a very rationed diet of some chocolate and wine that they found in their luggage. Eventually they even ate toothpaste and drank aftershave to appease their insatiable hunger. But in order to survive, they ultimately had to resort to more drastic measures – the price ultimately came with the lives of 16 people.

“The Snow Company” celebrated its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in the summer. The live-action adaptation will be available to stream on Netflix for the first time on January 4, 2024.
