Our neurons send electrical messages to communicate with each other, and when these messages are scrambled due to a lesion on one of the circuits involved in the coordination of movements or automatisms, tremors appear. It is therefore “sufficient” to interrupt this abnormal signal. Several techniques have been successfully developed that can “break the circuit” and stop the tremor.
Deep brain stimulation, the reference
Deep brain stimulation enjoys good hindsight. Invasive, it is better tolerated in young patients without comorbidity. This is the most expensive technique but the only one that is reversible. “An operability assessment is carried out with imaging to ensure that there are no contraindications (cerebral atrophy, tumor interfering with the passage of the electrode, etc.)”explain the Dr Marco Vincenzo Corniola, neurosurgeon, and Sophie Drapier, head of the Parkinson’s expert center at Rennes University Hospital.
