A father and his young son entered a toy store in Langham Place Mall in Hong Kong’s Hong Kong district. In the shop stood a statue of a golden teletubbies doll, 1.8 meters high. The store staff was furious when they found the designed figure, smashed to pieces.
They checked the recordings from the store’s security cameras, and there they saw the boy accidentally stumble back onto the statue, trying to pull him back before he fell. The huge decorative item, fell and crashed on the floor of the store.
At that moment, the boy’s father, Cheng, was making a phone call outside the store, but quickly looked back when he heard the sound of the crash. The father recounted: “My son was standing there, not moving. Just looking at the broken doll. He was so scared after the incident.” Cheng was sure it was his son’s mistake, but the sales staff at the store told him that his son had kicked the statue, which was what made him fall and break.
The embarrassed father agreed to pay for the damage. The store owner saw Cheng’s willingness and agreed to lower the doll’s price from $ 6,800, charging him only the cost price of about $ 4,300. The amount was paid in full, however, the father asked to watch the recorded segment. Realizing that his son had stumbled upon the statue by mistake, and did not kick it at all as he was told by the store staff, Cheng criticized the chain for misleading him and making him think his son had dropped the doll on purpose.
He demanded that the store owner return the money to him, claiming they had to put up a “Caution! Fragile!” Sign. On the statue. The store owner claimed that he offered a cost price and the father immediately agreed to pay, this was agreed upon by their sons and therefore will not return the money.
