The son of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka has resigned from the ministry

Namal Rajapaksa, the son of Sri Lankan Sports and Youth Affairs Minister and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, has resigned from all departments. He thanked voters and party workers and said his resignation had been announced and would take effect soon. Earlier, it was reported that Mahinda Rajapaksa had resigned, but the PM’s office denied the allegations.

The office said reports that Mahinda had handed over his resignation to the president were not true. Protests against the Rajapaksa government are raging across Sri Lanka in the wake of the severe financial crisis. There is a severe shortage of food, fuel and other necessities. It is alleged that the government’s misguided policies led to such a financial crisis.

A weekend curfew was declared in Sri Lanka as part of a crackdown on protests against President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Then the police have also been made against the protesters who have violated curfew. Authorities say 664 people have been arrested so far for violating the curfew. Mahinda Rajapaksa will take over as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in 2019.
