Title: Hubble Space Telescope Captures Stunning Image of Tadpole-shaped Object in the Soul Nebula

Published: September 29, 2023

Location: 7,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia, in the Perseus spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy

A breathtaking new image released by NASA showcases the remarkable beauty of the Soul Nebula, also known as Westerhout 5 or IC 1848, along with a fascinating star-forming bubble within it. Taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, the photograph reveals a dark, tadpole-shaped object immersed in a sea of vibrant red colors.

The Soul Nebula, classified as an emission nebula, is a vast cloud of dust and gas in space that emits its own light. The nebula appears red due to the emission of H-alpha light, which occurs when electrons within hydrogen atoms release energy in the form of light. This stunning display of colors makes the Soul Nebula truly exceptional.

The Hubble image unveiled to coincide with the autumn foliage season in the Northern Hemisphere showcases an evaporating gaseous globule (EGG) within the nebula. EGGs are compact pockets of molecular hydrogen gas found in star-forming regions. Dubbed KAG2008 globule 13 and J025838.6+604259, this particular EGG stands out as a detached free floater, reminiscent of a “frEGG,” with a unique “head-tail” shape.

Unlike other EGGs that are connected within nebulas, this distinctive frEGG floats freely. The dense gas within EGGs and frEGGs effectively protects developing baby stars from the potentially detrimental effects of ultraviolet radiation emitted by nearby stars. Acting as cocoons, these “eggs” provide a nurturing environment for the formation of new stars.

The Soul Nebula, a part of the star-forming Heart and Soul Nebula (IC 1805), is a popular sight for deep-sky observation in the winter months of the Northern Hemisphere. Telescope enthusiasts and stargazers can marvel at its wonders as it illuminates the night sky.

The mesmerizing image captured by the Hubble Space Telescope highlights the beauty and complexity of our universe, inviting us to ponder the mysteries that lie beyond Earth’s atmosphere. The Soul Nebula, with its stunning colors and enigmatic tadpole-shaped object, serves as a testament to the vastness and diversity of the cosmos.
