The cultural institution, most of which is devoted to the work of the painter, will be free on Sunday to pay tribute to the artist who died last week.

The Soulages museum in Rodez, most of which is devoted to the work of the Aveyron painter who died overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday at the age of 102, will be free on Sunday, the museum said on Friday.

“In terms of tribute, prefiguring more important events, the Soulages museum is open to everyone free of charge on Sunday October 30, 2022”, can we read in a press release from the Ruthenian museum.

A book of condolences

On the facade of the building inaugurated in 2014 in homage to the master of the Outrenoir, a large portrait of the painter is displayed.

“This museum is undoubtedly the most complete panorama of his work, from 1934 to 2019, paintings on canvas and on paper, prints, bronzes, environment of the stained glass windows of Conques, boxes, photographs, samples, models”, underlines the direction of the museum.

Visitors will also be able to find a book there to leave “a testimony of condolences, for Colette Soulages and her relatives”.

Another free museum

Soulages was born on December 24, 1919 in Rodez, in a craftsman environment which fed his imagination in the middle of his father’s body shop and the surrounding hills. He never cut the link with his native territory, while painting elsewhere.

Installed in Sète (Hérault) since the 1960s, Pierre Soulages died Tuesday evening at the Nîmes hospital of heart failure.

The Fabre Museum in Montpellier, which houses an important collection of works by Pierre Soulages, will also be free for the duration of the weekend.
